To Grandma at Christmas
By Kathy Covert Warnes
You have been gone for a little while,
But I haven’t forgotten your smile,
Your house has changed; it’s just not the same place,
It was when you lived there with warmth and grace.
You have been gone for a little while,
But I still remember your style,
You filled empty places in my young heart,
Then you went away and we live apart.
You have been gone for a little while,
But I haven’t forgotten your smile,
When I decorate my Christmas tree,
You are standing right alongside of me.
You have been gone for a little while,
But I haven’t forgotten your smile,
I see the loving smile on your face,
Your touch in poinsettias in your vase.
You have been gone for a little while,
But I haven’t forgotten your smile,
Spring comes and your garden tulips bloom,
Your lilac sprigs fill the house with perfume,
Hot summer brings excited demand,
For front porch sitting in front of your fan.
Every fall we rake the crunchy leaves,
Send them dancing out of your house eaves.
Winter brings gift mittens and bundling up,
Your endless hot chocolate in a cup.
You have been gone for a little while,
But I haven’t forgotten your smile,
You gave me many loving reasons,
To miss you every single season.
At Christmas decorating my tree,
You are here with your arms around me!
